Great Deal
Why does the electoral system cause some states to be ignored while others have a great deal of attention give?
Why does the electoral system cause some states to be ignored while others have a great deal of attention given to them?
Although McCain only lost by a relatively small margin of popular votes (46%, compared to Obama's 53% ), he was TROUNCED in the Electoral College (365 to 173; thus Obama got 68% of the EC, McCain 32%) !
If you live in NY, CA, IL, NJ, MA, OR, HI, ME, VT, or RI, and voted for McCain, your vote essentially did not count, because those states are so heavily loaded with Democrats. *ALL* of the electoral votes from those states went to Obama.
Similarly, if you live in OK, NE, AL, ID, WY, or UT, and voted for Obama, your vote did not count, because those states are so heavily loaded with Republicans. *ALL* of the electoral votes from those states went to McCain.
I would think Republicans would LOATHE this system.
Obama only needed 16 states to be elected: NY, CA, IL, NJ, MA, PA, MI, WA, CT, FL, OH, VA, MN, Wi, CO, and NV
If you think the existing Electoral College system is inequitable and obsolete, write your US Representative and Senators and ask them to begin the process to abolish it (go to http://www.congress.org and enter your ZIP if you don't know who they are).
